What is told

Amphibian humanoid hybrids that mate with the inhabitants of a decayed Massachusetts port. The human hybrids develop the «Innsmouth look» in middle age and end by going down into the sea.

In the corpus

The reading of it as an allegory of the fear of racial mixing is widely shared by critics and is not a militant forcing.

Publication data

The only story by Lovecraft published in book form during his lifetime: 200 bound copies out of 400 printed. It had been rejected by «Weird Tales» in 1933 on grounds of length. Lovecraft complained of some thirty typographical errors, slovenly typesetting and loose binding.
