A warning that holds for this whole section. The gap in documentary quality between Europe, Japan and the United States is not an accident. In Europe and in Japan folklore collecting was a state-backed national undertaking of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries — Kolberg, Jón Árnason, Christiansen, the Irish Folklore Commission, Yanagita and minzokugaku. In the United States the only comparable campaign was the Federal Writers' Project of 1936-40, with Foxfire as a late and local exception. The vacuum was filled by journalism, by tourism and, from the 1990s, by the internet. The American entries genuinely at grade A are those collected by the WPA and by Foxfire: everything else is B or C.
Where a tradition is not mine to tell, the entry describes the ethnographic context and the history of how the material was extracted, not the narrative content, and says so. Where an origin was fabricated by outsiders, the entry gives the year it was fabricated. The Method page sets out why.
